Notes - Don Wilson: Allan Cameron was born Nov. 16, 1805 and bapt. Jan. 12, 1806 in Williamstown, Ont., as recorded by Rev. John Bethune. His marriage records to Paulina Yeigh have him about the same date. He assisted in founding the town of Kincardine, he had three daughters. Allan operated a tavern in Kincardine and owned properly there to the year 1851, and then he disappears leaving his three children. No record has been found of what happened to him.
From the Kincardine Chamber of Commerce website: The first settlers in the County -- Allan Cameron and William Withers -- landed by ship ("The Fly") at the mouth of the Penetangore River* on March 5, 1848 and ten years later, Kincardine was incorporated as a village. Cameron built a hotel, his brother-in-law built a dam and a sawmill.
From the Kincardine Chamber of Commerce website: *In 1848 Allan Cameron and William Withers set up camp and called the area Penetangore, which is a very descriptive Indian word meaning "the river with sand on one side" The area was named Kincardine in 1857.
Margaret Cameron: later settled in Kincardine. I have a photo of Allan Cameron and William Withers, and photo from a newspaper of the "two descendants of Allan Cameron, one of two first settlers in district(Kincardine), Marilyn (left) and Pauline Tackaberry of Detroit, return to Kincardine every summer." ---clipping c1948.
