Time was about 10 miles from Nebo. Pop would hire a surrey with fringe on top to take us to see Mammy and Pappy Main. We would get there just before dinner time. I can remember what good food Mammy had. Fresh fried chicken she’d raised, potatoes and vegetables from their garden, delicious home made bread and little yellow tomato preserves.
The rooms in houses were small then. In their parlor was a baby grand piano, also Mammy’s quilting frames. She did quilting for people. I can shut my eyes and see her now: She was a small thin woman, her iron-grey hair parted in the middle and drawn into a knot in the back. Her name was Mary; Pappy’s name was Jacob. I think of them when I hear the song “Dear Hearts and Gentle People.”
The sidewalks in Time were all made of wooden boards. There was a band stand in the park across from Mammy and Pappy’s house. They had band concerts and ice cream and cake socials on Saturdays, given by the church. That was a big social event. I spent a couple of weeks in Time every summer. After Mom’s youngest sister Mabel was married and moved to Milton, a town about 12 miles from Time, I spent one summer with them. I was 15 then, and had a real good time. Uncle Leslie had a sister my age and a couple of brothers older. They lived a few miles away. They took me on a Showboat on the Mississippi river. It was a beautiful evening. After the show the orchestra played, and we danced in the moonlight on the deck. It was all so beautiful. Source: Irene (Hack) Lee
