The family moved from Northfield to North Dakota and then on to Hubbard, Oregon in 1893. Dad went to school at the old White School [sp?], east of Hubbard. They moved onto the old home place in 1896. Dad's dad [David] died in 1905, and Dad took over the farm then. He and Tote were married on January 26, 1908. From the Woodburn Independent February 1962: John Ramage, Area Prominent Farmer, Businessman, Dies John W. Ramage 76, Woodburn area resident for the past 69 years and prominent in agriculture and civic affairs, died last Saturday at a Salem nursing home following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Ringo-Cornwell Funeral Chapel and burial was at Belle Passi cemetery. Born in the Northfield area of Minnesota January 20, 1886, he came to Hubbard, with his parents in 1893. In 1896 they moved to a farm in the Union district north-east of Woodburn. He took over the operation of the farm on the death of his father in 1905. About 1946 he turned the farm over to his sons. He was married to Lora Hayes January 26, 1908 at Woodburn. Ramage was one of the organizers of the Woodburn Fruit Growers Cooperative association in 1922 and served either as president or on the board of directors until 1940 when he left to become president of the North Marion Fruit Co. He served as president of that firm which he helped organize until his retirement early in 1953. Ramage also was a member of North Marion Services formed in 1947 and from which he retired three years ago. Ramage was long a leader in community, county and state affairs. He served on the county welfare commission, county budget committee and numerous committees. He was active in republican affairs, with the North Marion county fair, and was a former Woodburn chamber of commerce president and several organizations promoting farm interests, was a member of the board of the Willamette Production Credit association from its organization in 1934 until he retired three years ago. He was association president three terms. Ramage was a member of the original committee working for the Willamette Basin Commission and served on the committee getting the first county agricultural agent for Marion County. Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons, Phil Ramage of Portland, Herbert Ramage of Woodburn and Gilbert Ramage of Spokane, Wash.; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy L. Allen of Belpre, Ohio, Mrs. Georgia Mae McCornack of Eugene, and Miss Gertrude Ramage of Portland, a brother Will Ramage of Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Maud Davis of Salem and Mrs. Belle Jones of Portland; 17 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
